After his death, Cutty Sark was transferred to the Thames Nautical Training College, Greenhithe in 1938 where she became an auxiliary cadet training ship alongside HMS Worcester. Cutty Sark was destined for the tea trade, a seasonal trade of a high value cargo from China to London. During the latter part of that year cases of Cutty Sark were smuggled into the US to appease demand from drinkers with exquisite tastes unsatisfied with the often foul-tasting moonshine liquor that were dark from added caramel colour, they sought something more refined in goods smuggled into the country.
